SEPTEMBER 2023 ZONE 1 PONY CLUB UPDATE: Issued by the Zone 1 Chief Instructors Panel (CIP)
Zone 1 Championship Event Dates:
Sun 12th November - Zone 1 Derby Treble (combining showjumping, jumping equitation & cross country events) at Northern Suburbs Pony Club. Our last Zone 1 competition for the year,, diarise now!!!
Events & Clinics
Showjumping Riders Clinic - Sat 7th October at Moggill Pony Club - Open for expressions of interest for riders competing 70cm and above. Clinic will include SJ skills techniques, course walk like a professional and riding a course and jump off for success. Coaches will include Ross Smith, David Finch and Gemma Creighton. This is an all day clinic with 2 x ridden and 1 x theory session, cost tbc (approx $100-150). Coaches will select participants from the applications.
Application are by expressions of interest should include:
details of 3 SJ competition results in the past 12 months (inc. height, event, number of competitors and result)
1 paragraph (no more than 100 words) detailing what you would like to work on at the clinic

Course Building Clinic - Sat 14th October at Brookfield Pony Club - for Accreditation, Refreshing, Upgrading, and as required by PCQ "Level C" trainee Coaches. Noms on the Zone 1 website.
Showjump Judges Clinic - Sun 21st October - at Runcorn Pony Club - for Accreditation, Refreshing & Upgrading. Noms on the Zone 1 website.
End of Year Coach Assessment - Sat 4th November - assessment for PCQ and PCA NCAS trainee coaches. Nominations come via your club chief instructor.
Gear Checker Accreditation day** - Sat 4th November - interested members should read the information on the PCA website at https://ponyclubaustralia.com.au/pcancas/
** Please note that you must have completed and passed the on-line Gear Check Written Exam (open book) prior to assessment.

Zone 1 Gear Check Clinic, Sat 29th April, 8am - 11.30am, at Southside Pony Club. Aimed at practical hands-on teaching of the PCA Gear Rules, (from 8am -10am), with an extra session for assessment (10am - 11.30am) for those members who are ready and have fulfilled the pre-requisites for the PCA Gear Checker Certificate. Nominations are open on the Zone 1 website.

INTRODUCTION
The PCA Gear Check Accreditation aims to provide knowledge and set standards of the gear check procedure for those carrying out gear checks at Pony Club®. Carrying out a comprehensive and standardised gear check is part of PCA’s risk management and compliance system. Successful applicants will receive a Gear Checker Certificate.
PRE-REQUISITES
Candidates for the gear checker certificate must:
- Be a current member of Pony Club Australia
- Meet the requirements for Working with Children (current Blue Card or Exemption)
- Be at least 16 years to receive the accreditation
- Have attended and observed gear check procedure at two separate rally, muster or Pony Club® run events, prior to assessment, and
- Have been supervised performing gear check procedure on two separate occasions at rally, muster or Pony Club® run events, prior to assessment.
ASSESSMENT
Assessment will include:
- Completing an open book examination on gear/ uniform rules. Find this exam on the PCA website, under Coaches/ Coach Education, then scroll down to Gear Checker Accreditation and click on "National Gear Checking". This is to be completed by Friday 21st April, using Erika Woodland as the Assessor's name and erikawoodland@bigpond.com as the assessor's email.
- A practical gear check before a qualified assessor.

ZONE 1 CAMP at the Boonah Showgrounds... NEW FORMAT this year!!! Nominations via the Zone 1 website, www.zone1.org.au
Arrive from 12 midday Friday 23rd June.
Saturday 24th & Sunday 25th June - 2 days of funfilled group activities and expert coaching, lots of new experiences & friendships to enjoy.
Programme includes Light Horse Drill Work, Cattle Work Training Clinic, Showjumping Training, Gymkhana Events Training, Presentation Master Class, Trick Riding Clinic, Rider Class Perfection, Working Equitation.
Monday 26th June - new format competition called the Tri-series event. Followed by Monday Night Social event.

PCA National Gear Rules: clubs should have a hard-copy of the PCA National Gear Rules (effective 1st July 2022) available at their club for musters, and at events for the Gear Check personnel. You can order your copy from PCQ for $12 if you collect it from the PCQ Office, or $15 posted to you. If using an electronic device, make sure that you have downloaded the Gear Rules dated 1st July 2022 from the PCA website.
To help our Zone 1 members understand some of the new Rules and revisit some previous PCQ Rules for musters, the Zone 1 CIP have put together the attached document which is specific for our musters. Please read through and refer to the Pony Club Australia website for their full version.

- PCQ & NCAS Instructor MID-YEAR ASSESSMENT - Sat 28th May - at Darra Oxley Pony Club - for those PCQ and NCAS trainees who are ready for assessment. Also, for any lapsed instructors, contact the CIP for details.

Events for Riders:
- Rider PCA C & C* Proficiency Certificate Assessment - Sat 21st May, venue to be announced.
Riders must have already gained the required PCA pre-requisite certificate, and have completed their PCA Certificate Workbook, and been confirmed as competent in all ridden & ground work, plus horsemastership topics, by their Club Chief Instructor. The PCA on-line C exam must be completed by this Friday 6th May, as previously advised.
- Riders' Showjumping Clinic - Sat 30th July - at Moggill Pony Club - progressing our riders' showjumping skills, knowledge and ringcraft by focussing on the Basics. 2 experienced showjumping coaches will be guest instructors. More details soon... diarise now!!!
